Giant Food and Kroger, two major grocery chains, have announced the closure of multiple fulfillment centers as part of a strategic shift in their delivery operations. This move comes amid changing patterns in consumer demand and the evolving landscape of grocery delivery services.
Giant Food's Strategic Shift
Giant Food has decided to close two of its fulfillment centers as it restructures its delivery model. The centers located in Hanover, Maryland, and Milford, Delaware, are set to cease operations. However, the facility in Manassas, Virginia, will remain operational. This center spans 82,000 square feet and is equipped with the latest batch-picking software, enabling it to continue supporting the company's logistics needs.
The decision to retain the Manassas facility while closing the other centers reflects Giant Food's new strategy to utilize in-store employees for delivery services. This change aims to enhance efficiency and potentially improve the customer experience by leveraging existing store resources.
Kroger's Fulfillment Center Closures
Kroger has also announced the closure of three automated fulfillment centers, located in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin; Frederick, Maryland; and Groveland, Florida. These closures are part of a planned operational adjustment that is scheduled to take effect in January 2026. Despite these closures, Kroger will continue to monitor the performance of its five remaining facilities to ensure optimal service levels.
Since partnering with Ocado Group in 2018, Kroger had planned to establish 20 fulfillment locations, with eight currently built. Despite the closures, the company remains committed to its delivery capabilities, with 97% of its stores able to deliver within two hours. Expanding partnerships with delivery services such as DoorDash and Uber Eats is part of Kroger's strategy to maintain a robust delivery network.
Impact on Employment
The closures will inevitably impact employment, with 45 jobs set to be lost due to the shutdown of the centers in Pennsylvania and Virginia. This aligns with the announcement from National Fulfillment Services, which is also slated to close in November, resulting in a similar loss of jobs.
The affected employees will face the challenge of transitioning to new roles or seeking opportunities elsewhere as the grocery chains adapt to new operational models.
